Rations Bars

Eating on the road doesn't have to be boring! Grab these crunchy pieces of delicious fuel at your local inn, tavern, and, on occasion, apothecary, before hitting the road.

Prep time: 10 minutes

Bake time: 35-40 minutes

First seen in: Ep 21

2 cups of old-fashioned oats

1/4 cup sweetened flaked coconut

1/4 cup sliced almonds

1/4 cup chocolate chips

2 T all-purpose flour

1/4 t salt

3 T honey

1 T light brown sugar

2 T unsalted butter

2 T vegetable oil

1 t vanilla extract

  1. Pre-heat oven to 300°F.

  2. Line a 9x9 inch baking pan with parchment.

  3. In a large bowl stir together the oats, coconut, almonds, chocolate chips, flour, and salt.

  4. Melt together the honey, brown sugar, butter, and vegetable oil in a small pot over low heat (or gently heat in microwave in a microwave-safe bowl, stirring between heatings, until combined).

  5. Once the liquids are melted together, stir in the vanilla extract.

  6. Pour the liquid mixture into the dry mixture and gently stir together. The chocolate may melt a little and that's okay!

  7. Pour into prepared baking pan and push into an even layer. Put a second layer of parchment paper on top and use your hands or a flat object to press the granola bars down so they are tight and even.

  8. Bake for 35-40 minutes until the top of the bars are lightly golden brown. Allow to cool completely on counter before removing and cutting into rations bars.

  9. Pack in an airtight bag and put directly into your pack! We recommend individually wrapping in parchment so you can divvy them up with simplicity. If you don't like these breaking, we can recommend storing your bag of bars inside your bedroll. Every time you unroll it you'll also have a treat to munch on as you wind down from a long day's travel.
